Classical Guitar Recording Services in London: Sound Engineering for Acoustic Instruments

Professional Classical Guitar Recording in South West London

Finding an engineer who truly understands the demands of recording classical guitar is harder than it sounds. The instrument's dynamic range, tonal complexity, and sensitivity to microphone placement require not just technical knowledge, but the kind of intimate understanding that comes from years performing the instrument yourself.

Having spent a significant part of my career on the performer's side of the microphone, I developed a deep fascination with the recording process itself—how microphone choice, placement, room acoustics, and signal chain work together to capture classical guitar faithfully. That curiosity led me to learn from experienced engineers and develop my own approach, shaped by knowing exactly what a classical guitarist needs and wants from a recording session.

A Performer's Ear Behind the Desk

What sets my recording services apart is the perspective I bring from the other side of the microphone. As a classical guitarist myself, I understand the subtleties that matter: the warmth of the bass response, the clarity of treble articulation with brittleness, the natural decay of notes in a well-chosen room. I know when a recording captures what the performer intends and when it doesn't, as I've been in that position myself countless times.

This performer's perspective informs every decision I make in a session, from initial microphone placement to final mix. The result is recordings that feel authentic to the instrument and honest to the musician's intentions.

Recording at WiGS, Raynes Park

Most of your sessions happen at the WiGS venue in Raynes Park—a space I've come to know intimately through my work with the Wimbledon classical Guitar Society. The Lady Chapel’s acoustics are a dream for classical guitar and small ensembles, providing that essential blend of natural warmth and clarity. While my earliest efforts were a bit unpolished, the ‘steep learning curve’ of capturing these concerts has refined my process significantly.

I have recorded a range of distinguished artists and ensembles at this venue, including:

  • Eden Stell Guitar Duo — internationally acclaimed classical guitar duo

  • Vida Guitar Quartet — one of the UK's leading classical guitar ensembles

  • Londinium Consort — early music specialists bringing historical authenticity to their recordings

  • Eleanor & Gus — a versatile acoustic duo spanning multiple genres

  • Guitar students from the London conservatoires — including students from the Royal College of Music and Royal Academy of Music

This experience across soloists, duos, and larger ensembles has developed my ability to capture everything from the intimacy of solo guitar to the complex balancing demands of ensemble recording.

Wimbledon Recording Setup: Affordable Sessions

For smaller projects, I run a more compact recording setup in Wimbledon that offers a cost-effective alternative to larger studio sessions. This setup is ideal for demo recordings, student portfolios, online content, or projects where budget is a consideration without wanting to compromise on quality. Room hire for recordings (before my professional rate) begins at £20/hr (soloists) and at the higher end £37/hr for the larger space (for ensembles if required)

This option makes professional-quality classical guitar recording accessible at a more affordable price point, particularly useful for students preparing conservatoire applications, musicians building an online presence, or guitarists simply wanting a high-quality document of their playing.

What to Expect from a Recording Session

Every session begins with a conversation about your goals. Whether you're recording a debut album, building an audition portfolio, or capturing a live performance for online release, understanding your intentions shapes every decision about the session.

I take time to find the right microphone placement for your specific instrument and playing style, as even small adjustments can dramatically alter how a guitar sounds on recording. Room preparation, string freshness, and session pacing all factor into achieving the best possible result.

I work calmly and efficiently, aware that recording can feel pressured for performers. My goal is to create a relaxed environment where you can focus on your best playing rather than the technical process around you.

Who Is This Service For?

My recording services are suited to:

  • Classical guitarists seeking professional recordings for albums, applications, or online content

  • Small ensembles including duos, trios, and quartets looking for sympathetic acoustic recording

  • Students from conservatoires and music colleges building audition or application portfolios
