What My Students Say
-
Brad is a patient, creative teacher who focuses on solving problems. If I'm not happy with an aspect of my playing he'll find the root cause of the issue and persevere until we find a solution that works for me. However disheartened I'm feeling about my playing, I come away from lessons re-motivated and with a few more tips and techniques to practice.

I spent years experimenting with nail shapes that didn’t suit me, but Brad worked with my natural hand position to get me playing with a sweet and warm sound.

I have been taking lessons with Brad for just over a year now. And he is transforming my playing, releasing me from constraints built in from many years with other teachers. He has an amazing focus on technique that works well for me. I wholeheartedly recommend Brad to others.

Brad is an absolutely brilliant teacher! I saw immediate progress in the first few weeks of having lessons with him. He is not only a classical guitar powerhouse, but also an expert in the field of shred guitar, while approaching teaching with a great deal of enthusiasm. I couldn’t recommend him enough!

I have been learning the mandolin with Brad for just over a year now. He is knowledgeable, enthusiastic, patient and very good at judging my level so that in each lesson I learn something new and feel stretched, but never get disheartened through being pushed too hard.

I have been receiving lessons from Bradley Johnson since May 2024 and I did not expect to make the progress that I have made in such a short time…Every lesson with Bradley is a revelation in terms of what I learn. If you are seeking an open and easy-to-work-with classical guitar tutor then recommend Bradley.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
-
My teaching practice is based in Wimbledon. I have students from all over South West London and beyond!
-
The first lesson is free, giving new students a chance to experience my teaching style and see if it’s the right fit. I can usually fix one or two things right away, so it’s a win-win for you!
-
There is no obligation to continue. However, if you enjoyed the session and want to build on what we started, the ‘Extended Trial’ is the perfect way to continue.
It gives us a dedicated window of time to move past the basics and see real results without you having to commit to a long-term contract.
-
While the curriculum is identical, the delivery differs. In-person lessons offer a hands-on, tactile experience in a controlled acoustic environment.
Online lessons are highly efficient for theory and repertoire but rely on the student's home setup. The price difference reflects these different logistical requirements.
-
Everything we do is housed in a private Notion workspace created just for you. No more digging through emails - your resources, feedback, and schedules are all organised in one easy-to-access link.

While digital lessons are convenient, there are critical physical elements that I cannot perform through a screen:
Instrument Inspection: I cannot physically inspect the action (string height) or intonation of your guitar. If your instrument is physically difficult to play, I cannot ‘feel’ it to diagnose the problem.
Nail Care & Tone: For fingerstyle and classical players, tone is in the nails. In the studio, I physically file and shape your nails to ensure perfect tone. Online, I can only offer verbal advice.
Posture & Safety: A 2D webcam cannot accurately show me the tension in your shoulder or the micro-angles of your wrist. In person, I can inspect your posture from every angle to prevent long-term strain or injury.
String Maintenance: I cannot help you change your strings or perform minor instrument tweaks during our session.
Audio Accuracy: Online platforms compress audio. I cannot hear your true tone or the ‘color’ of your playing accurately over the internet.
Latency (Lag): We cannot play together in perfect sync online. In the studio, we can play duets and exercises in real-time, which is vital for developing your internal rhythm.

Yes, I’m very familiar with both ABRSM and Trinity exams and have been preparing students for these for over 10 years. I have a range of specific resources to support students at different levels. I'm also currently writing a course on ABRSM Grade 5 Theory, which will be available soon to help students prepare for that exam in detail.
-
This initial meeting gives us a valuable opportunity to understand your goals and expectations for the lessons. It also allows me to tailor future sessions to your needs, ensuring you get the most out of our time together if you decide to continue.
-
Lessons are typically held via Zoom or Microsoft Teams.
-
Lesson duration varies; but usually an hour.
-
I’m classically trained, but I also love playing and teaching rock and metal. Lessons can be tailored to cover classical techniques as well as more modern styles.
-
Absolutely! Lessons are tailored to your goals and musical preferences. When booking your appointment, feel free to mention your musical interests and any specific goals.
